Drama Youth Worker – Y-Act Project

Rate: £13.16 per hour
Hours: 12 hours per week
Contract: Part-time
Location: YMCA Bellshill & Mossend
Reports to: Y-Act Project Coordinator
Application Deadline: Monday 3rd November at 5pm
Interviews: Week commencing Monday 10th November

About the Y-Act Project

Y-Act is an exciting, creative youth theatre initiative that uses drama as a tool for personal growth, confidence and wellbeing. Each year, the project engages 30 young people aged 7–17 in a structured programme that builds self-belief, teamwork, and communication through performance and storytelling.

While each cohort takes part in Y-Act for a year, this post is funded for three years, offering the successful applicant the opportunity to make a lasting impact across multiple groups of young people.

Across four terms, participants will:

  • Term 1: Build drama skills including storytelling, improvisation, script writing, performance, and creative movement.

  • Term 2: Work towards an accredited Trinity College London Grade 1 qualification in Speech and Drama.

  • Term 3: Create and develop their own issue-based drama scripts, exploring real-world themes and building empathy and resilience.

  • Term 4: Rehearse and perform their final production — sharing their work at community events and even performing at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Your Role

As Drama Youth Worker, you’ll play a key part in delivering and shaping the Y-Act Project, working closely with the Y-Act Project Coordinator to inspire and support our young people through the power of drama.

You will:

  • Co-facilitate weekly drama youth work sessions, ensuring sessions are inclusive, engaging and developmentally focused.

  • Conduct monthly 1:1 sessions with young people aged 7–17 to support confidence, communication and emotional wellbeing.

  • Use drama-based methods such as improvisation, character development and storytelling to explore ideas and build self-expression.

  • Support the delivery of Trinity College London Speech and Drama qualifications.

  • Assist with rehearsals and performances, including those held in local venues and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, progress and outcomes.

  • Promote an inclusive, supportive and creative environment where every young person feels valued and heard.

Working Schedule

12 hours per week (proposed breakdown):

  • Tuesday: 4pm – 7pm (3 hrs)

  • Wednesday: 2pm – 8pm (6 hrs)

  • Thursday: 4pm – 7pm (3 hrs)

  • Tuesday and Thursday hours can be flexible to fit your lifestyle and the needs of the young people.

  • These hours include both direct delivery and planning time.

  • Wednesday sessions are office-based and involve facilitating the weekly drama sessions in person at YMCA Bellshill & Mossend.

We understand that part-time roles need to fit around your other commitments. Please let us know in your application if you have any time conflicts — we’ll do our best to accommodate your schedule within the needs of the project.

We’re Looking For Someone Who:

  • Has experience working with children or young people, ideally in a drama, education or youth work setting.

  • Is confident in using creative, person-centred approaches to engage and inspire young people.

  • Has strong organisational and communication skills.

  • Can work both independently and collaboratively as part of a small, supportive team.

  • Is passionate about using drama to promote confidence, creativity and emotional wellbeing.

  • Holds, or is willing to obtain, PVG Scheme membership through Disclosure Scotland.

A background in drama, performing arts, youth work or education would be an advantage, but enthusiasm, empathy and reliability are equally important.

What We Offer

  • £13.16 per hour (holiday pay accrued).

  • Stable, 3-year funded position with opportunities for professional growth.

  • A supportive, creative and inclusive working environment.

  • Opportunities to gain additional training and experience in youth arts and education.

  • Flexibility around working hours and personal commitments where possible.
